In September 1900, two freight trains collided at the Sarnia Bridge, St Marys, Ontario.

A heavy freight going west got stuck on the grade just west of the Sarnia bridge. The train backed for a second attempt to make the grade and was standing on the bridge.

A through freight at full speed came round the sharp curve to the east and the breaks were applied. The engineer, fireman and brakeman saw that a collision was inevitable and were able to jump to safety. The engine destroyed the caboose of the stopped train, derailed and stopped halfway down the embankment.
